    How the spec finder works

The finder lists the laptops in our buying guides and lets you narrow them down by price, memory, storage, processor brand, screen size, operating system, weight, battery life and touchscreen. The list updates as soon as you change a filter, and the result count tells you how many laptops are left. Reset filters clears everything.

Your filters are added to the page address, so you can bookmark a search or share it. The finder is free and does not need an account.

    How the filters read specs

    Configurable laptops

Many laptops come in several configurations, for example with 16GB or 32GB of memory. The memory and storage filters match a laptop if any listed configuration meets your choice. Check that the model you buy has the configuration you need, because the starting price is usually for the smallest one.

    Missing data

We do not guess. If we have no weight for a laptop, it is hidden when you filter by weight, and the finder tells you how many laptops were hidden for that reason. The same goes for price, battery life, screen size and every other filter.

The operating system comes from the laptop itself: MacBooks run macOS, Chromebooks run ChromeOS, and laptops with Intel, AMD or Qualcomm processors are listed as Windows unless our data says otherwise.

    Battery life and weight

Battery figures are the runtimes listed in our reviews, mostly from independent testing by outlets such as Tom's Guide, PCMag and CNET. Where a review lists more than one figure, the finder uses the first one. Expect less with heavy use such as gaming or video exports. Weight is the lightest listed configuration in pounds.

    Which specs matter most

For school and office work, 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage are a comfortable target for the next few years. Programmers and data scientists benefit from 32GB of memory, and video editors from 1TB of storage or more. See our best laptops for programming for more detail.

If you carry your laptop every day, filter for under 3 pounds and 12 hours or more of battery life, then read our best lightweight laptops. For games, look for a dedicated graphics card in the specs. If you take notes by hand or sketch, add the touchscreen filter to see 2-in-1 laptops.

Not sure which specs you need? The laptop quiz asks about how you work instead, and the laptop comparison tool puts your shortlist side by side.

    Frequently asked questions

Where does the laptop data come from?

Every laptop in the finder comes from our buying guides, with the specs and starting prices listed in those reviews. Each result links to the guide where the laptop is reviewed.

Why does a laptop disappear when I filter by weight or battery?

We hide laptops we have no data for when you filter on that spec, instead of guessing. The finder shows how many laptops were hidden for missing data.

How does the memory filter handle configurable laptops?

A laptop matches if any configuration listed in our review meets your choice. The price shown is the starting price, which is usually for the smallest configuration.

    Can I share my search?

Yes. Your filters are saved in the page address, so you can bookmark it or send the link to someone else.
